IKEA Hemnes 3-Drawer + Changing Top

IKEA Hemnes 3-Drawer + Changing Top

A real three-drawer dresser with a removable changing top — a changing table for eighteen months, a dresser for eighteen years — instead of furniture that's obsolete at potty training.

Last reviewed: September 17, 2026

Why this one

A dedicated changing table is furniture with an eighteen-month lifespan. A dresser with a changing top is a dresser you'd own anyway, with a removable tray that holds the pad at waist height. The Hemnes is solid pine at the right height, with drawers deep enough for the whole capsule wardrobe underneath the pad.

The practical detail: anchor it to the wall — every dresser, always, but especially one a toddler will climb — and keep the diapers in the top drawer so the change is a one-hand reach. Assembly takes a couple of hours; do it before the baby, not after.

Choosing the dresser-first design means one fewer piece of furniture to sell at month eighteen, and a nursery that becomes a child's room without buying anything.

What we considered and rejected

Dedicated changing tables

Open shelving is convenient and cheap; entirely obsolete after potty training.

Still a good pick for: Very short-term nurseries.

Any dresser you already own + a strapped pad

Genuinely fine if it's the right height and anchored; add a non-slip pad with a wall strap.

Still a good pick for: Minimalists who already have the dresser.
